ABOUT Moses W. Ngware

Ngware is Senior Research Scientist, and Head of Education and Youth Empowerment research unit at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC). Ngware holds a PhD in Economics of Education from Egerton University, Kenya.  He designs and conducts policy relevant research in education and youth empowerment and currently focuses on education and skill training systems in sub-Saharan Africa, and the effectiveness of education interventions.

With more than 20 years of research experience, he has conducted more than 18 impact evaluations, longitudinal studies, and surveys in sub-Saharan Africa that have informed education and training policies. His current research work is on what is happening inside the classroom, impact evaluation of education interventions to improve learning outcomes, and the efficiency and effectiveness of the education and training systems. From his research background and training, he has a wealth of experience on experimental and quasi-experimental research designs, quantitative research methods and classroom/teaching observations. Previously, Ngware has served as Senior Lecturer at Egerton University, Kenya; and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. He served as policy analyst, social sector, at the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis, and also led the Education Working Group under the INDEPTH Network that has 36 Demographic Surveillance Sites spread in 12 countries in Africa. He is a DAAD scholar and has written more than 100 publications including peer-reviewed journal articles, book and book chapters, working and discussion papers, technical reports and policy briefs. He serves on the advisory board of  one international journal, the Comparative Education Review, and is also a guest editor of the Frontiers in Education: Leadership in Education.
