CDRISK4: Biobanking of leftover samples from routine healthcare provision in Kenya and Uganda

Project Period

February 2025 - February 2025

This project aims to assess the services availability and readiness to establish biobanking of patient leftover samples from selected health facilities in Uganda and Kenya. We shall retrospectively review records from selected health facilities to assess the patient caseloads and the common types of specimens collected for routine diagnosis. Primary data from patients and healthcare providers shall be collected using questionnaires and in-depth interviews to assess the attitude, practices, and willingness of stakeholders towards biobanking of leftover samples.

We shall establish two cardiovascular disease biobanks (one in Uganda and one in Kenya) to serve as ongoing practical learning hubs. Our results will guide the establishment of other biobank facilities within health facilities in Africa, as these are fundamental translation research facilities to support patient management.  This will make samples available to researchers across different localities to address critical research questions to improve care of people with chronic diseases.
