ABOUT Patrice Akusa Mawa

Dr. Patrice Mawa leads a study on biobanking left-over samples from health facilities in Uganda and Kenya. This study focuses on infrastructure development for biobanking in Uganda and Kenya, with the aim of creating a platform for studies that support translational research and precision medicine in Africa.

He also supports other projects aimed at understanding the interplay of risk factors for chronic diseases and has an oversight role over the APHRC laboratory, ensuring efficient processes and systems are in place for quality outputs.

Patrice holds a master’s and PhD in Immunology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK. He led studies on the immuno-epidemiology of helminths, HIV, and tuberculosis at the Uganda Virus Research Institute, Entebbe. He has over 20 years of experience in laboratory management and clinical research.

Patrice has acquired grants as a Principal Investigator, contributed to several grants, co-authored publications in peer-reviewed journals, and edited several journals. He is also involved in supervising and mentoring students and junior staff.

He is motivated by intellectual curiosity, passion for discovery and innovation, and the desire to make a societal impact. Patrice believes in partnerships that result in networks where cutting-edge state-of-the-art research ecosystems are co-created with the engagement and empowerment of the public or research communities.
