Richard Edwin Sanya
Richard Sanya is an associate research scientist in the Health and Wellbeing theme at APHRC. He leads epidemiological and implementation science research projects, focusing on non-communicable diseases (hypertension and diabetes), neglected tropical diseases, and digital health interventions.
Dr. Sanya is an internal medicine physician by background. He has been a full-time researcher, leading research projects since 2014. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree, a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine degree, and a PhD in Medicine.
Before joining APHRC, he was a research scientist at the Medical Research Council/Uganda Virus Research Institute and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Uganda Research Unit, where he, among other duties, led extensive epidemiological studies investigating the link between helminths and non-communicable diseases. Before taking up the full-time research role, he held teaching and clinical positions in Uganda at the Faculty of Medicine, Gulu University (as a lecturer), Mulago National Referral Hospital, Kampala (as senior house officer), and St. Kizito Hospital Matany, Karamoja (as a medical officer).
