The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is pleased to announce the official registration of our West African office in Dakar, Senegal. The move to establish a permanent presence follows sixteen years of success in our programs which have gained traction across West Africa and seen an increased demand to expand our footprint in the region.
APHRC, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, is the continent’s premier research institution on population health and well-being. We conduct policy-oriented research with our cadre of African research leaders from more than 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Our teams lead the development of priority research programs and advance the use of evidence in the development of policies and large-scale programs, as well as allocation of resources for key social development sectors including health and education.
Since our establishment in Kenya in 2001, APHRC has become an autonomous regional institute and is now a leading Africa-based and Africa-focused research institution. For two consecutive years — 2016 and 2017 — APHRC has been recognized as the top domestic health policy think tank in the Global Go To Think Tank Index Report developed by Pennsylvania University. We were also the institutional laureate for the 2015 UN Population Award. We could not have achieved this without your support.
In West Africa, we plan to continue doing what we do best: generating and synthesizing credible research evidence; using that evidence to inform policy and decision-making; and nurturing the next generation of African research leaders. All these as we work to fulfill our vision of using research to transform the lives of Africans.
In this region, we will explore the linkages between development and our priority research areas which include population dynamics; maternal and child health; sexual and reproductive health; urbanization; health challenges and systems; aging; and education. We are committed to excellence in research and policy engagement. This can be seen in our design and implementation of innovative projects involving primary research and secondary analysis of existing data; synthesis of evidence; and monitoring and evaluation of interventions that are relevant and responsive to local and regional policy and program needs.
