EU-AFRICA PerMed

Project Period

December 2021 - February 2021

Addressing global health challenges is only possible by building and strengthening international, intercontinental, and national scientific cooperation between scientists, decision/policymakers, private practitioners, industries, health professionals, and civil society.

The EU-Africa PerMed project is a collaboration between Africa and Europe to enhance the successful implementation of Personalised Medicine (PM). This will be done by fostering joint PM projects and programs between Europe and Africa and strengthening bilateral European Union-African Union science, technology, and innovation partnerships in the area of health.

In the long run, incorporating African countries in the global personalized medicine research agenda will contribute to shortening the existing health disparities between developed and developing countries. It will also facilitate the access of African countries to new tools and technologies that can make health care more efficient and equitable. The project is organized around seven main Work Packages:

  •  Coordination and management
  • Mapping the health R&I and policy landscape in Africa to identify key stakeholders, initiatives, and expertise relevant to PM
  • Cross-border collaboration and identifications of future actions in PM between Africa and Europe
  • Translating science to policy – Enhancing the dialogue between African countries and Europe in collaboration with ICPerMed and Era PerMed
  • Capacity building in Personalised Medicine
  • Communication and dissemination
  • Ethical issues

The project is being implemented by a consortium of 13 partners, six from Europe and seven from Africa. The names of the consortium partners are: African Population and Health Research Center, Innovatec, Ministry of Health Italy-MoH, European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network -ECRIN, Agence Nationale de la Recherche –ANR, Instituto de Salud Carlos III – ISCIII, Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale INSERM, Center for Innovation & Technology Development – ECITD, South African Medical Research Council –SAMRC, East, Central, And Southern African Health Community -ECSA-HC, National Council for Science, Technology, and Innovation – NACOSTI, Reseau African de Recherche Sur Le Sida –RARS, African Union Development Agency -New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA NEPAD)
