CDRISK6: The Next Generation Vaccine Card: Innovative Technology to Improve Vaccine Equity in Rural and Urban Settings in East Africa

Project Period

February 2025 - February 2025

This project aims to develop and evaluate a ‘digital vaccine card’ and registry that will facilitate the electronic collection of individual data at health facilities. The study will 1) evaluate the current vaccination landscape in an urban informal settlement in Kenya (Viwandani), 2) co-design and develop a ‘next-generation digital vaccine card’ and; 3) implement and evaluate the ‘next-generation digital vaccine card.

This study is implemented in an urban informal settlement in Nairobi (Viwandani) and rural and peri-urban areas (Ruwenzori Demographic Surveillance platforms) in Kasese, Uganda. Implementing a digital vaccine card platform is expected to result in improved vaccination coverage, particularly among vulnerable groups, reducing disparities in under-five morbidity and mortality rates and contributing to overall reductions in under-five mortality rates.

The platform is also expected to coordinate with other digital systems in the government and provide data that policymakers can leverage to structure and deliver health, education, and other social services more equitably.
