The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led and Africa-based international research institute committed to conducting high quality and policy-relevant multidisciplinary research. Our researchers address critical development issues and challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in areas such as education, population, health, aging, urbanization, and wellbeing. Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action, engage with policymakers in the region to disseminate our research findings, influence policy decisions, and improve the quality of life in Africa.

The Projects

The Countdown 2030 Initiative for Women’s, Children’s, and Youth Health is a global partnership of academic institutions, universities, and UN agencies that aims to improve the measurement and monitoring of women’s, children’s, and adolescents’ health. The project focuses on intervention coverage and inequality coverage and strengthens regional and national capacities on evidence generation and use. As part of the consortium, APHRC is leading the Countdown work in SSA. Through regional networks, the Center brings together research and public health institutions with ministries of health from countries in the region to strengthen the evidence and advocacy in support of Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) and nutrition programs. The Countdown Initiative calls for the accountability of governments and development partners, identifies knowledge gaps, and proposes new actions for universal coverage of women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health. The Immunization Advocacy Initiative (IAI) believes that a more robust civil society, armed with technical skills in using evidence to drive advocacy priorities, can be an effective lever of influence on government decisions to fund a stronger and more resilient health system, with equitable and inclusive coverage of routine immunization as a foundation for that system. Over the lifetime of the project, civil society networks in Kenya, Ghana, and Cote d’Ivoire will receive bespoke training in using evidence for advocacy. They will also receive financial support to carry out advocacy-oriented activities at the national level to both generate demand for vaccination and to encourage sustainable funding of those vaccination campaigns.  Scope of work and Job description

APHRC is looking for a videographer with graphic design skills to lead the production of videos for the Countdown to 2030 Initiative and the Immunization Advocacy Initiative. Further, the person will also lead the design of different publications produced by the Initiative. This is a full-time staff position where the qualified candidate will work under the overall guidance of the Advocacy Unit within the Policy Engagement and Communications Division. The position may be based in our Nairobi, Kenya, or Dakar, Senegal office. The successful candidate should be able to make use of innovative and illustrative storytelling techniques to engage our audience. Most of the produced content will be shared through project websites, social media platforms, and e-newsletters.

The main tasks include:

1. Developing storyboards to be approved by the project team before the filming/editing dates.
2. Filming on location on dates to be confirmed.
3. Creating graphics where necessary.
4. Leading the overall production of tutorial videos for CD2030 Initiative.
5. In case filming needs to be supported remotely, the videographer-designer will develop guidelines on how to record, type of lighting, camera settings, and overall video outline concept to ensure uniformity.
6. For remote filming, the videographer-designer will organize a dry run (a private practice session) with interviewees, speakers, etc. to ensure everyone is ready for the final recording session.
7. Leading overall filming and production of project videos among other assignments.
8. Providing support for the design of communication products/publications produced by Countdown to 2030 and other specific projects within APHRC.
9. Managing the post-production process and corresponding multimedia platforms being used.

Minimum Requirements:

1. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in communications, journalism, film, design, or related field.
2. Experienced in videography and graphic design and able to provide showreel or a portfolio to highlight past work.
3. Proficient with relevant editing and graphic design software.
4. Must be able to communicate and write in both English and French languages.
5. Good knowledge of virtual platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google meet and the ability to conduct virtual interviews.
6. Be prepared to work full time on this role for at least one year.
7. Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
