Peter Otieno

Post Doctoral Research Scientist

Peter Otieno is a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the Chronic Disease Management Unit and leads the Multimorbidity Synergy Research Group at APHRC. He is a multimorbidity epidemiologist whose work focuses on the integrated management of chronic conditions and the use of multimorbidity modelling to inform precision and person-centered care. Peter manages several multi-country projects on adolescent health, noncommunicable diseases, and integrated care models across Kenya, Ghana and Uganda. He holds a PhD in Multimorbidity Epidemiology, specializing in the multimorbidity of cardiometabolic diseases, from the Amsterdam University Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He is also a 2024 Bernard Lown Scholar in Cardiovascular Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, USA. Before his current role, he served as a Research Officer at APHRC and previously at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). In these roles, he contributed to several studies on chronic disease prevention, health system strengthening, and service delivery innovation in sub-Saharan Africa. Peter is motivated by the everyday realities of people living with multiple chronic conditions in communities where healthcare access is limited. His work aims to generate practical evidence that can ease treatment burdens, strengthen primary care, and support equitable, people-centered health systems across sub-Saharan Africa.

Peter has held several research fellowships, including with the Center for Effective Global Action at the University of California, Berkeley; the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; UNICEF Innocenti; Cornell University, USA; and the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development, the Netherlands. He also serves on national technical working groups for noncommunicable diseases (NCD) with the Ministry of Health in Kenya. In these roles, he contributes to policy discussions on integrated care, NCD service readiness, and primary healthcare strengthening. He is an editor and reviewer for several global NCD journals and mentors early-career researchers.
