The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. APHRC generates and supports the use of evidence for meaningful action to improve the lives of all Africans through:

  • Research that emphasizes health and wellbeing;
  • Capacity strengthening that deepens the skills of African researchers, scholars and institutions within the continent; and
  • Policy engagement and communication that supports greater influence of evidence in policy – and decision-making across sub-Saharan Africa.

The APHRC seeks to recruit a Communications and Knowledge Translation Officer to work in the Policy Engagement and Communications (PEC) Division. The officer will be part of the National Sanitation and Advocacy Project team supporting improved sanitation in Eastern and Southern Africa.

Responsibilities

  1. Project documentation and Communication
  • Documenting project activities and sanitation initiatives that APHRC is part of;
  • Generating reports, fact sheets and policy briefs on national sanitation initiatives in Eastern Africa;
  • Working with other teams to generate synergy on project implementation; and
  • Funder and stakeholder reporting.
  1. Knowledge Interpretation and communication
  • Understanding research findings and communicating the same for adoption by key policy makers;
  • Interpretation of research findings for key stakeholders;
  • Documentation of project success stories for key audiences;
  • Production of fact sheets and policy briefs; and
  • Dissemination planning and execution of materials to stakeholders.
  1. Stakeholder engagement and communication
  • Working with stakeholders to plan meetings, take and give feedback; and
  • Working with sub grantees in liaison with the project manager.
  1. Project implementation support
  • Support project implementation activities including logistics and event documentation as may be necessary from time to time; and
  • Working with other program/project officers to support meetings and make reports.
  1. Perform any other tasks required to advance the project and the division’s objectives.

Qualifications and Desirable Experience

  • Minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s (undergraduate) degree in Public Health, Communications, Journalism, Public Policy, Development Studies or related areas of study.
  • At least two years of post-qualification work experience in the WASH sector, preferably in a communications role within East Africa.
  • Solid understanding of sanitation issues especially for low-income areas and informal settlements.
  • Ability to communicate about these issues in a simple and compelling manner across different media.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • A resourceful self-starter with analytical and organizational skills. Strong team player, able to collaborate with a team of highly skilled professionals.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently to fulfill team goals and manage multiple deadlines.
