Mental health disorders cause substantial global suffering, reduced functioning, and economic costs for individuals, families, and communities. In 2019, one in every eight people worldwide was living with mental health disorders, with depression and anxiety being the most prevalent. 75% of individuals with mental health disorders live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with no access to treatment.

Ensuring mental well-being stands as a critical priority on both global and continental agendas for development. The challenges of mental health, if left unaddressed, can impede Africa’s progress towards achieving economic prosperity and fostering social advancement.
