ABOUT Nelson Muhia

Nelson Muhia is a Research Officer in the Education and Youth Empowerment Unit at the African Population and Health Research Centre. His interests are in adolescent education and well-being, focusing on girls’ education, improving learning outcomes, life skills, parental involvement, and gender. Nelson was also a project manager of an after-school support program targeting about 2000 parent-adolescent dyads in two urban informal settlements (Korogocho and Viwandani) in Nairobi, Kenya from 2013 to 2021. The program was dubbed ‘Advancing Learning Outcomes for Transformational Change (A LOT-Change). The intervention components included homework support, mentorship in life skills, parental counseling, career awareness, service learning, digital literacy, and financial support to transition to secondary school.

He holds an MA in Population Studies from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Sociology from Egerton University. Nelson has also contributed to various dissemination efforts through co-authored peer-reviewed articles, technical reports, conference presentations, and opinion pieces. He hopes to use his skills and knowledge to come up with solutions that will transform and uplift the lives of children and youth in Africa.
