ABOUT Mat Lowe

At APHRC, Mat coordinates program planning and delivery across the West Africa Regional Office pillars; leads integrated reporting and fosters cross-team synergies (Research, Research and Related Capacity Strengthening (RRCS), and Policy Engagement and Communication (PEC). He holds a PhD in Global Health Policy and Management, a Master of Science in Public Health, and other relevant qualifications in Gender, Population, and Development Studies. He has led implementation research portfolios across Anglophone and Francophone West Africa (The Gambia, Senegal, Ghana, Burkina Faso), including International Development Research Center (IDRC)-funded projects on adolescent health, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), gender norms, child, early, and forced marriages (CEFMU), and maternal health. He has directed multi-disciplinary teams, built staff capacity in monitoring and evaluation, and community engagement.

Mat is passionate about using evidence to inform actions on women’s health and social well-being. This passion inspired him to establish the Society for the Study of Women’s Health (SSWH) in 2017, a local scientific research organization dedicated to promoting women’s health and social well-being in The Gambia through applied research and evidence-based advocacy.
