The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led and Africa-based international research institute committed to conducting high quality and policy-relevant multidisciplinary research. Our researchers address critical development issues and challenges facing sub- Saharan Africa (SSA) in areas such as education, population, health, aging, urbanization, and wellbeing. Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action, engage with policymakers in the region to disseminate our research findings, influence policy decisions, and improve the quality of life in Africa.

APHRC invites applications for young researchers in its Channels and Actors Study being conducted in Kenya. The main aim of the study is to understand how young people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) access and engage with mental health information and services. The young researchers will be trained, mentored and supported by APHRC researchers to design, implement and communicate their research findings.

Minimum qualifications required:

  1. The individual should be aged between 18 and 24 years by December 31, 2021.
  2. Holds or currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in any field from a Kenyan University.
  3. Fully available during the period between August and December 31, 2021.
  4. Interested in research, and ready to undertake a short research project.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  1. Participate in a series of training workshops focusing on the subject of mental health of young people, research methodology, report writing and communication of research findings.
  2. Carry out research by recruiting participants from among fellow young people, analyze data and write up a report from the data.
  3. Undergo mentoring from APHRC researchers during the period of the engagement.
