The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and engaged in multidisciplinary, evidence-based policy research. Our researchers address important issues and challenges facing Africa in areas such as education, health, population, aging, urbanization and wellbeing. We engage with policy makers in the region to disseminate our research findings to influence policy decisions and improve the quality of life in Africa.

HealthyFoodAfrica is a Horizon2020 European Union funded project that aims to make food systems in Africa more sustainable, equitable and resilient. APHRC is responsible for setting up a Food System Lab (FSL) in Nairobi in collaboration with community organized groups in Nairobi slums.

Nairobi FSL aims to enhance household food availability and access through innovative urban farming, including crop and small-scale livestock farming, and setting up a teaching hub and/or a community demonstration center to build the capacity of urban farmers. The project will also aim to enhance food safety through promotion of hygienic handling of food among vendors and households.

Scope of Assignment

We seek to engage the services of an innovative urban farming expert to provide technical support to the Healthy Food Africa Food System Lab in Nairobi. The expert will work with the project team to design and pilot a successful Food System Lab for Nairobi.

Duties and Responsibilities

To achieve the objective of this assignment, the expert is expected to:

  1. Hold consultative sessions with APHRC to clarify needs and asks and on need basis during the assignment period.
  2. Provide technical support in designing the Food System Lab for Nairobi
  3. Provide technical support on innovative urban farming methods during the set-up and piloting of the Food System Lab for Nairobi
  4. Participate in capacity building for urban farming in Nairobi
  5. Visit field sites for monitoring and supervision of urban farming activities

We will share electronically, content, documents and project guidelines needed for this assignment.

Qualifications

Masters level education in a relevant field and five years’ demonstrated experience in urban farming is desirable.

Contract duration: 1 year part-time (20% FTE).
