The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-based, African-led, international nongovernmental organization that conducts high-level scientific research in areas such as education, population, health, aging, urbanization, and the well-being of African populations. APHRC aims to bring about change in sub-Saharan Africa using reliable data analyzed by experienced African researchers. Our programs are oriented toward continental development priorities and are guided by the belief that evidence must be at the forefront of decisions about the health and well-being of populations and the development of the continent.

APHRC is planning to undertake a survey among older people (60+ years) to estimate the population-level prevalence of Parkinson’s disease, and assess knowledge and attitudes of influential community advisors in Kenya and Senegal.  We are looking for a Research Officer to support this work in Senegal.

Duties/Responsibilities :

  • Participate in the development and review of tools for laboratory quality management including manuals, standard operating procedures, training manuals
  • Lead the recruitment, training and supervision of field interviewers
  • Coordinate all logistical activities pertaining to the project including ethical reviews, research permits, national or sub-national approvals, meetings
  • Coordinate day to day activities in the execution of the project to ensure timely implementation of field operations including ensuring that projects have the necessary supplies for the execution of the project
  • Conduct spot checks and ensure all quality procedures are maintained during data collection
  • Prepare project reports and update the project team regularly
  • Contribute to institutional publications (i.e. lay dissemination materials such as policy/research briefs and fact sheets) and local dissemination of findings in Senegal
  • Undertake any other task assigned by the supervisor, Project manager and Principal Investigator.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Public Health or any Health-related field
  • Demonstrated experience in managing teams desirable
  • Research experience at least 3 years
  • MS Office proficiency, very good data analytical, presentation & report writing skills
