The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with a regional office in Dakar, Senegal. Our researchers are contributing to the body of evidence about the critical issues in population health and wellbeing impeding Africa’s development in order to provide strong direction and recommendations to policy- and decision-makers at all levels. Our priority research areas are Human Development, Health and Well-Being, Data Science and Evaluation, and Population Dynamics and Urbanization in Africa. In addition to the research component, APHRC has other programmatic areas in Research and Related Capacity Strengthening, Policy Engagement and Communications and International programs.

 

The APHRC invites applications for Quantitative and Qualitative Field Interviewers in its Knowledge Innovation and Exchange Learning through Play (KIX-LtP) project. The endline survey of the study aims to measure the capacities of teachers on the implementation of learning through play approaches in pre-primary schools in Kajiado, Kiambu, and Nairobi Counties.  It also aims to generate evidence that would contribute to the implementation of competence-based curriculum in Kenya.

Quantitative Field Interviewers

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct interviews with all recruited study
  • Complete, edit, and submit all assigned interviews for cross-checking and verification by the supervisor on a daily
  • Review the collected data to ensure all questions are completed prior to online
  • Follow-up with participants for missing responses or correct any inaccurate
  • Regularly file reports on the project
  • Ensure the safety of all assigned study tools and
  • Any other related activity assigned by the supervisor, project manager and principal

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate, with a minimum grade of C
  • Experience in early childhood, education, school or community surveys
  • Fluency in English and Swahili and Maa, or Agikiyu languages, both oral and
  • Experience in electronic data capture methods like survey CTO or Open Data Kit (ODK) and devices like electronic digital
  • Must be a current resident of either Kajiado, Kiambu, or Nairobi

 

Qualitative Field Interviewers

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Moderate/facilitate qualitative interviews with all recruited study respondents.
  • Obtain and document informed consent/assent from the study participants prior to the interviews
  • Fluency in the Maa or Agikuyu language for candidates from Kajiado and Kiambu County respectively.
  • Take notes and compile comprehensive qualitative interview debriefing reports/notes.
  • Prepare data collection progress report and updates.
  • Liaise with and support community mobilizers to reach out to all study participants
  • Document, share, and apply lessons learned
  • Other related tasks assigned by the supervisor, project manager and principal investigator

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, Disability Studies, or any other related course from a recognized
  • Have proven experience and skills in qualitative research methods (conducting FGDs, IDIs and/or KIIs).
  • Ability to facilitate and moderate group discussions in English and Swahili or in Local language of the Maa and Agikuyu community.
  • Have experience in note taking during qualitative interviews.
  • Have proven experience in qualitative data collection in pre-primary and early grade primary schools
  • Be familiar with computer applications, including MS Excel, MS Word, and MS
  • Must be a current resident of either Kajiado, Kiambu, or Nairobi
  • Be available to work full-time on the project for the duration of the study.
