The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led and Africa-based international research institute committed to conducting high-quality and policy-relevant multidisciplinary research. Our researchers address critical development issues and challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in education, population, health, aging, urbanization, and wellbeing. Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action, engage with regional policymakers to disseminate our research findings, influence policy decisions, and improve the quality of life in Africa.

APHRC seeks to recruit an Entrepreneurship Education Consultant to work in the Human Development theme. The recruitment for this position will be subject to receipt of funds from our partner organization.

The Entrepreneurship Education Consultant will work on a study to explore entrepreneurship-related practices and/or responses in Africa, targeting both basic and tertiary levels of education. Specifically, the consultant will be involved in various project phases, from design, implementation, and related monitoring and evaluation activities during the study.

Scope of Work

The consultant will deliver short-term support to APHRC and her partners in implementing an entrepreneurship study/project titled ‘Leveraging Inclusive Entrepreneurship Education and Training for Transformative Economic and Human Capital Development in Sub-Saharan Africa.’  The consultant’s scope of work will also entail initiating and/or fostering collaboration with selected Universities’ departments to domesticate and spearhead this study.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop an action plan detailing plans on how to support the APHRC team in offering additional inputs into the implementation of the study in the target countries (may include Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, and Uganda but not confirmed).
  • Support the literature review on entrepreneurship education in the study countries and provide recommendations for improvement in provisioning of entrepreneurship education and other related on priority areas. Experience in conducting entrepreneurship or business-related research in a research or academic outfit/institution. This will entail undertaking documents synthesis and/or related assignments to explore:
    • Countries’ entrepreneurship education and training programs’ dimensions (or scope);
    • The extent to which existing entrepreneurship education and training programs align with the market demands;
    • How the entrepreneurship education and training programs in the study countries are gender-responsive and transformative; and,
    • Notable and scalable entrepreneurship programs and offer recommendations for curricula adaptation.
  • To identify and highlight the varied entrepreneurship education and training programs available and offered by the respective countries’ higher education institutions (HEIs), mentoring services provided, delivery mechanisms, their duration, teacher training resources, coaching, and frequency and/or level of coverage (e.g., primary, secondary and tertiary levels).
  • Support coordination of the project, including taking part in actual data collection by interviewing key education stakeholders (key informants).
  • Participate in dissemination of research findings and policy dialogue with relevant education actors/stakeholders.
  • Prepare policy briefs and fact sheets from the projects’ findings.
  • Maintain open communication with key contacts (i.e., program staff, policy level personnel, and recipients of interventions) and the APHRC research team during and beyond the data collection period.
  • Actively participate in project meetings as may be required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in entrepreneurship or related business education field, education administration/management, curriculum studies, and policy studies with a focus on education or any other related discipline. Candidates with a Master’s degree and over 12 years of experience in entrepreneurship or the aforementioned fields can be equally considered.
  • Experience working in a research institution and conducting research.
  • Proven experience in leading research programs/projects, or managing research projects is an added advantage.
  • Entrepreneurship development experience would be an added advantage.
  • Must be fluent in English, with fluency in French being an added advantage.
  • Excellent scientific writing skills.
  • Experience in conducting field research in education and managing research teams.
  • Good quantitative or qualitative skills; experience with mixed methods will be an added advantage, provided one is very strong in quantitative or qualitative methods.
  • Good computer literacy and knowledge of multiple statistical and/or qualitative software packages such as STATA, SPSS, NVivo, or ATLAS.ti.
  • Experience in engaging policymakers with research evidence.
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks, and meet tight deadlines.

Expected Duration 

  • This work is expected to be a three-year project, with a start time of January 2023 and completion slated no later than July 2025. During this period, the consultant will be engaged on a need-by-need basis. Some tasks are more urgent and may need the consultant’s attention in the third and fourth quarters of 2022.
  • The frequency of the consultant’s stay over the study period depends on a specific plan developed by APHRC in liaison with the partners with whom the project is jointly implemented.

Remuneration

A contract will bind the agreement between APHRC and the consultant, and it will be subject to APHRC receiving funding for this assignment from the partner. The consultancy fee will be a fixed daily rate pegged on the amount of work scheduled.
