Nairobi, June 03, 2024 – In an effort to combat unhealthy diets and physical inactivity among adolescents in Sub-Saharan Africa, the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) has joined a global consortium (Generation-H).
Funded by the European Union, Horizon Europe, and UKRI, Generation-H brings together expertise from APHRC, Amsterdam University Medical Center (UMC), University of Amsterdam, University of Ghana, Loughborough University, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development, and the Belgian Public Health Institute – Sciensano. This consortium will implement a multi-dimensional intervention strategy designed to promote healthier lifestyles and prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among young people (aged 10-19 years) in urban settings in the Nairobi and Greater Accra region, ultimately aiming to reduce the prevalence of NCDs in adulthood.
Their collective efforts will focus on designing, deploying, and evaluating a comprehensive strategy that will include educational programs, community engagement, policy advocacy, and partnerships with educational, faith-based, and healthcare organizations. The project will use evidence-based and theoretically grounded approaches aligned with the WHO Best Buys for NCD prevention and control to maximize impact.
Additionally, the consortium understands the role of local stakeholders in promoting a sense of ownership and empowerment among local populations. As such, we will collaborate with local implementing partners such as the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), Nairobi County, and the Kenya Ministry of Health to ensure that the interventions are tailored to Kenya’s unique cultural contexts.
The project will run from January 2024 to December 2028.
