Food security is achieved when everyone, at all times, has reliable physical, social, and economic access to enough safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary requirements and personal preferences for a healthy and active life. Despite being a critical component of this right, food safety is often overlooked. Each year, around 600 million people worldwide suffer from illnesses caused by consuming food contaminated with harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemicals—leading to approximately 420,000 deaths. This underscores the urgent need for food safety measures. Since contamination can occur at any point along the food value chain, it’s essential to identify these stages and implement effective prevention strategies throughout the process.
