Vincent Omondi Were
Vincent is a research scientist in the Data Synergy and Evaluation Unit under the Research Division. His main areas of interest and application are impact evaluation, health economics, mathematical modelling, statistical analysis, and health system modelling. His current work cuts across several programs at APHRC, including the Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Disease unit, research and research-related capacity strengthening, human development, health and well-being, and longitudinal health and demographic surveillance. He has over 20 years of experience in research, training, and teaching.
He has a PhD in health economics from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) in the United Kingdom and a master of science in community health, specializing in epidemiology and biostatistics, from Great Lakes University. He also has a bachelor’s degree in statistics and computing from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. As a health economist, he completed his three-year postdoctoral training at the KEMRI welcome-trust, Nairobi. Before joining APHRC, he was the head of data management and statistics at the Kenya Medical Research Institute, malaria branch, in Kisumu, Kenya. He has had opportunities to learn and train in five different universities during the PhD phase, including the Swiss Tropical Institute (Swizz TPH), Imperial College London, University of Western Cape, University of Cape Town, University of Washington, and the London School of Hygiene and Topical Medicine (LSHTM).
Vincent is passionate about finding solutions to reduce socioeconomic inequalities in accessing and utilizing health services and interventions. He develops models to assist policymakers in prioritizing cost-effective, equitable, sustainable, priority, and scalable solutions in resource-limited settings. He is also passionate about community development, research, training, and mentorship.
