ABOUT Soumaila Ouedraogo

Soumaila focuses on aging issues in sub-Saharan Africa that are relevant to national and international development agendas. These include mortality, longevity, morbidity, and health inequalities in later life. His interest expands to other demographic and social issues, such as fertility and families through delayed nuptiality and fatherhood, as well as migration issues in late life. Further, he is interested in the completeness of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics systems and the quality of data, particularly age data, as this is critical for any age-related indicator. He strongly advocates for greater attention to African aging populations in development policy agendas and data collection initiatives where this vulnerable population segment is neglected.

He holds a PhD in demography from the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in France. Before his PhD, he was a fellow of the European Doctoral School of Demography (EDSD). His experience spans social statistics and quantitative methodology. Before joining APHRC, he was hosted at the Institut national d’études démographiques (INED) for his doctoral studies, then at New York University Abu Dhabi as a postdoctoral researcher.

In line with APHRC’s slogan, Soumaila’s motivation is to contribute to transforming the quality of life of older African adults by generating evidence through research.
