ABOUT RACHEL ADONGO ODHIAMBO

Rachel supports research teams at APHRC by developing data visualization platforms, conducting statistical analyses, and developing tools for needs assessments and surveys. Her work primarily focuses on projects related to health and demographic surveillance systems. She actively trains data managers on data harmonization, standardization techniques, research data analytics, FAIR data practices, and data documentation activities.

Rachel holds a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science with IT and is about to begin her master’s in Data Science. Her career in data began in January 2023, fresh out of campus, when she joined Dalberg Research as a junior data clerk, working mostly on data quality assurance and checks. She then joined APHRC later that year in November as a Data Science intern, where she contributed to projects involving Vaccine-preventable disease analytics, developing agent-based models, and harmonizing and standardizing data in the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership – Common Data Model (OMOP CDM). She then became an Assistant Data Scientist and assisted with developing dashboards for visualizing data from education research. She is currently a data scientist, supporting several projects at the various stages of their life cycles, from tool development, analytics, report writing, and other dissemination activities.

She is passionate about using data to solve real-world problems and supporting evidence-based decision-making that impacts and transforms lives in Africa.

Rachel has managed to train over 10 data managers on how to successfully harmonize health data while also learning on the job.
