ABOUT Joel Kuria

Joel is a research officer working with the Data Synergy and Evaluation Unit (DSE) and currently supports the Mental Health Data Prize Project. The project aims to transformatively change the way data is used to find solutions for mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis in Africa.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Political Science from The University of Nairobi. His multidisciplinary skills include qualitative and quantitative data analysis, Demographic Surveillance Systems, GIS, Role-playing games, and qualitative applications for participatory and Agent-based modeling. Before joining APHRC, Joel was a research assistant at the United Nations University (UNU-Macau).

He has also previously worked with APHRC on multiple projects, including mapping for better healthcare in Nairobi’s slums funded under the NIHR/Mapping project, assessing the readiness of health facilities to provide non-communicable disease services in Kenya under the Joep Lange Chair 4 (JL4) project, stakeholder mapping and community profiling in Korogocho and Viwandani under the ARISE Project, using mobile technology to break access and awareness barriers for the benefit of patients with diabetes and hypertension, implemented under the Ngao ya Afya project, changing food systems in Kenya and Malawi and the challenge of tackling antimicrobial resistance under the CFS/AMR Project among others.

 

Joel is passionate about pushing the boundaries of knowledge and eager to apply extensive research experience in a dynamic environment to make meaningful contributions, especially in the areas of his research interest: population health, citizen science, and data-driven policies.
