Beyond the Desk: Kennedy Kamau

If you could travel anywhere to study something new, where would you go and what would you study? I would travel to South East Asia to study the Bajau people. They are incredible divers who have adapted to life at sea, developing larger spleens for more extended underwater stays. I am fascinated by their unique physiology and deep connection to the ocean.

What’s a random talent or hidden skill you have that most people don’t know about? I remember faces really well, and I am good at recognizing when modern music samples older songs, even when the sample is subtle.

What’s one song or show that always puts you in a good mood? “Beautiful Day” by U2. It’s my go-to song for lifting my spirits on tough days. TV Show: Malcolm in the Middle. It’s a hilarious show that never fails to make me laugh. I watch it every year for a good dose of humor.

What’s the most random skill you’ve ever learned? Tell us more about it. Writing limericks! I am still learning this quirky poetry form, but it’s fun trying to craft silly five-line verses.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received in your life? The best advice I have ever received is to “bloom where you are planted.” This quote, whose origin I can’t recall, reminds me to make the most of my current situation. Another piece of wisdom I cherish is J. Cole’s “Love Yours,” which encourages gratitude and appreciation for the “little” we have.
