ABOUT Florah Katanu Karimi

Florah is the Head of the Research and Related Capacity Strengthening program. She also manages two successful programs – the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) and the fund management for the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR).

She holds a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degree in Education, with a focus on Educational Psychology. She has more than 20 years of vast experience in higher education, research, and research capacity strengthening. Florah is a higher education quality assurance expert within the East African Region. Over the past six years, she has successfully managed individual and institutional research and related capacity strengthening projects, interventions, and partnerships, including fellowships, training courses, institutional mainstreaming, and fund management.

Florah has previously worked in various capacities including National Technical Advisor on Higher Education, working closely with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and on World Bank-supported higher education projects in Kenya. She has also served as a Higher Education Administrator, Curriculum Developer, and Lecturer within Kenya, and a Trustee in the Kenya National Research Fund’s Board.  She has developed proposals and won grants worth more than USD 25 million and published more than ten peer-reviewed articles on higher education, research, and research capacity strengthening initiatives in Africa.

Florah is passionate about quality postgraduate training, research, and research capacity strengthening in the African region.

She is also one of the Principal Investigators in the Capacity Development of Applied Epidemiologists (CDAE) and Examining participation and experiences of women in postgraduate training in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs in universities in East Africa projects.
