ABOUT Silas Onyango

Silas Onyango is a Post-doctoral Research Scientist in the Human Development (HD) Theme where he leads various projects within the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Unit. He is currently spearheading the work on the Early Care and Education (ECE) Focal Area under which are two projects – one that seeks to strengthen learning through play in sub-Saharan Africa (a GPE Knowledge and Innovation Exchange [KIX]-funded project) and the Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD) project which investigates nurturing care practices for children with neurodevelopment disabilities in Kenya.

 

Silas holds a Ph.D. in Public Health/Epidemiology (with a focus on children’s developmental outcomes) from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) an associated institute of the University of Basel, Switzerland, a Master of Science Degree with focus on ECD for children with special needs from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Trondheim, Norway, and a Bachelor’s degree in early childhood development and education (ECDE) from Kenyatta University, Kenya.

Silas is passionate about understanding how childhood experiences affect their lifelong outcomes. He is driven by the belief that all children irrespective of their cultural orientation, race or economic status can fulfill their human potential in dignity and equality. Further, he believes that protecting, promoting and supporting ECD through evidence-based health and educational interventions is essential to enable children achieve positive long-term outcomes in health, education and labor.
