Research and Related Capacity Strengthening (RRCS)

This focus area develops capacities to strengthen the research ecosystem in Africa

Research and Related Capacity Strengthening (RRCS) co-designs and implements capacity-strengthening initiatives using a systems-thinking approach, exploring the interactions between social, technical, economic, environmental, and political forces to inform decision-making and shape strategy. This is achieved through three intertwined approaches: Individual Capacity Strengthening (ICS), Capacity Strengthening for Institutions (CSI), and R&D Ecosystem Strengthening (R&D ES).

Capacity Strengthening for Institutions

The Capacity Strengthening for Institutions (CSI) unit seeks to strengthen institutional capacities to collaboratively develop/enhance systems, structures, and processes that promote research and development in Africa.

Individual Capacity Strengthening

This unit seeks to strengthen the technical, intrapersonal, and interpersonal aspects of an individual’s capacity to undertake high-quality research or related functions that contribute to the development of Africa’s self-sufficiency in R&D.

Research & Development Ecosystem Capacity Strengthening

This unit seeks to strengthen support structures, regulatory framework, and linkages for African research institutions and researchers to become critical voices and drivers of the development agenda in Africa.
