Joan Watiri Kinuthia
Research Officer
Joan manages the field implementation of the Epilepsy Pathway Innovation in Africa (EPInA) project for the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Unit. Her duties include planning activities, supervising research assistants, ensuring data quality control, and submitting reports.
Joan started her journey with APHRC as an intern in 2021. During her internship, she worked on a study investigating the correlation between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and childhood malnutrition in Nairobi’s informal settlements. After her internship, she worked as a field coordinator for the EPInA project, which provided her with more experience in comprehending the health disparities within the urban informal settlements of Nairobi City County. Before joining APHRC, Joan was a research assistant at Cheshire Disability Services Kenya (CDSK) and Action Network for the Disabled (ANDY). She holds a bachelor’s degree in food, nutrition, and dietetics from Kenyatta University. She is pursuing a master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, and disease control from the same university.
Joan loves working in a dynamic research environment where science informs policy and programmatic decisions. She desires to bridge the diagnostic and treatment gap for noncommunicable diseases through advanced evidence-based research.
Joan enjoys participating in various exciting activities, such as archery and hiking.
