In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) has co-generated evidence to evaluate gender mainstreaming practices in basic education and teacher training in Kenya. This research was informed by limited evidence of what was working well vis-àvis what did not work in implementing the Education and Training Sector Gender Policy. Furthermore, the Ministry of Education was keen on using evidence in the gender and education policy review.
This research report highlights findings on how the teacher-training curriculum prepares teachers to implement gender-mainstreaming strategies within the basic education sector policies and guidelines. The research reports on the status of gender mainstreaming practices inside the classroom during teaching and learning and how these influence school attendance, choice of subjects, and academic performance.
