Introduction

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led and Africa-based international research institute committed to conducting high quality and policy-relevant multidisciplinary research. Our researchers address critical development issues and challenges facing sub- Saharan Africa (SSA) in areas such as education, population, health, aging, urbanization, and wellbeing. Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action, engage with policymakers in the region to disseminate our research findings, influence policy decisions, and improve the quality of life in Africa.

APHRC is looking for an experienced bilingual communications professional who is creative, organized, highly motivated, results-oriented, and a great communicator to join a dynamic team and help bring lasting evidence-based change in Africa. The incumbent will report to the Communications Manager-Synergy Unit and will be based in Nairobi.

About the Hewlett Care Economy Project

The project seeks to generate and foster the use of evidence and gender-aware macroeconomic tools that contribute to increased public investment in care provisioning and infrastructures for young children and older adults. The African Population and Health Research Center and a team of global and regional partners will assess the economic and social impacts of existing care arrangements in Kenya and Senegal and develop innovative tools to inform national economic policies and budgets. The team will support regional partners in using new evidence to influence governments’ post-COVID-19 policies to address the demand for unpaid care work and support women’s economic agency.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will contribute to knowledge translation and policy engagement efforts in collaboration with researchers and the policy engagement and communications team working on the Care Economy Project.

The Communications Consultant duties include:

  • Implementing communications strategies focusing on bringing research evidence to decision-makers
  • Mapping and engaging policymakers and other stakeholders in Kenya and Senegal
  • Developing strategic relationships with critical national and international media to ensure comprehensive coverage of the APHRC research (local and international radio, television, print, and online)
  • Developing press and communication materials for media events using key research study findings
  • Contribute to researching, writing, and editing in-house publications, including blogs, articles, report summaries, case studies, and human-interest stories
  • Producing and disseminating communication materials, including brochures, posters, infographics, audio-visuals, and policy documents
  • Organizing event for journalists to sensitize and create awareness on APHRC’s research
  • Assist in procurement of outsourced communications related services such as graphic design, videography
  • Any other tasks as assigned by the Communications Manager.

Qualifications and other competencies

  1. A Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Film Production, Public Relations, Development Communications, or related field
  2. Fluency in French and English
  3. Over 5 years of post-qualification work experience in communication, writing and content creation, public relations, and media relations
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication
  5. Ability to work independently in mobilizing media coverage and producing quality communication material
  6. Networking, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills coupled with resourcefulness, initiative
  7. Experience in engaging multi-country stakeholders with a view to engender evidence in decision-making at country and regional level
  8. Experience in graphic design, audio-visual production (added advantage)
  9. Understanding of the care economy especially as relates to children and the aged (added advantage).
