The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. APHRC conducts policy-relevant research on population, health, education, urbanization and related development issues in sub-Saharan Africa.

As part of our strategy to improve the Center’s ability to engage in global and continental discussions about solutions to the challenges impeding Africa’s development, we are recruiting three (3) Multimedia Officers to ensure quality control in our multimedia content. These are new roles arising from the implementation of the current five-year strategic plan which has, subsequently triggered tremendous growth in our programs.

Two (2) positions will be based in the Synergy Unit which contributes to and collaborates with researchers on the translation of research evidence into different formats for technical and non-academic audiences. It also positions our evidence and experts, contributing to raising the profile of the Center. One (1) position will be based in the Visibility Unit which is responsible for the Center’s corporate communications and manages the APHRC brand to enhance the Center’s profile as a thought leader in evidence-based policy formulation, showcasing impact through policy engagement and creating awareness within Africa’s research and development (R&D) ecosystem. Position holders will play similar roles, with a few differences, based on the objectives i.e. Center-level (visibility) or project-level (advocacy and synergy).

Duties and Responsibilities

The ideal candidate is a nimble multitasker with a strong background in print and multimedia content development, and exacting attention to detail. S/he will be able to handle a complex workload, is responsive as well as proactive, and is comfortable providing mentoring and coaching to various teams including a highly trained and educated cohort of research professionals.

  • Write, edit and review a variety of products across three programmatic divisions, including corporate products such as annual reports, newsletters and brochures.
  • Collaborate with other communication teams and units to develop multimedia content for various projects.
  • Create innovative, engaging multimedia products, such as videos, graphics, animations, and infographics tailored to a range of audiences.
  • Liaise with designers and external suppliers in developing design related materials such as the digital annual report.
  • Ensure all multimedia content aligns with the organization’s brand and messaging guidelines.
  • Monitor and analyze the effectiveness of multimedia content, adjusting as necessary to improve engagement and reach.
  • Lead multimedia productions including video, and photography and conduct interviews and capturing photographs/videos during project activities, and events.
  • Develop and manage APHRC’s digital photo library, and ensure the correct details are included (proof of consent, photographer credit, etc.) when they are uploaded.
  • Support all online campaigns in liaison with other APHRC programs and implementing partners.
  • Contribute to the implementation of the Center’s social media strategy including updating of content on the corporate social media platforms.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or a related field OR a diploma in audiovisual or any multimedia certification with an accompanying portfolio.
  • At least 3 years of relevant post-qualification work experience.
  • Proficient experience in multimedia software tools, graphic design and desktop publishing software including, such as Adobe Creative Suite, Corel suites, Final Cut, Storify, Prezi, Slideshare, and other editing software.
  • Experience and understanding of social media platforms and digital media trends.
  • Visual media skills including use of still and video camera; ability to develop video storyboards and basic editing to a professional standard.
  • Experience of website management and content management systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively under tight deadlines.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating a range of design projects and styles.
  • Solid understanding of design principles, typography, color theory, and layout techniques.
  • Ability to present concepts verbally.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Provide general administrative support to communications activities as needed.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, creative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work within a culturally diverse team.

This position is classified under Nationally Recruited Positions (NRP), Grade V in our scales.
