The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) has for the fourth year in a row been recognized among the top global think tanks in the 2019 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report. This authoritative report is produced by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program of the Lauder Institute in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania.
In the global report, APHRC was the highest-ranking African think tank in the domestic health policy (12) and global health policy (27) categories.
The Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) examines the evolving role of public policy research organizations in governments and civil societies worldwide and fosters collaborative efforts among communities that improve and strengthen policymaking across the world. Generated from a database of over 8000 think tanks, and reviewed by experts, the Go To Index is used to identify and recognize centers of excellence in policy research, forge knowledge and policy partnerships and create a global think tank village.
“We are thrilled that our relentless efforts to produce and share policy-relevant research are being globally recognized, but we are more excited by the impact our work is having in shaping policies and programs in ways that benefit the common person,” said APHRC Executive Director Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi.
In its 14th edition, this year’s report highlights the impact of emerging technologies on think tanks. Dr. McGann of the Lauder Institute notes that “Think tanks need to analyze and communicate issues associated with these changes and contribute to shaping the new order of things by utilizing emerging technologies in data collection, analysis, and communication.”
Since its inception in 2001, APHRC has generated evidence and knowledge that has contributed to shaping the policy discourse in sub-Saharan Africa in health systems strengthening, maternal and child health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and non-communicable disease prevention. The Center champions robust data systems as the foundation for sound policymaking and service delivery and has spearheaded efforts to strengthen Africa’s systems for producing, processing and using data through its own work and by advocating for increased investments in data systems in the region.
The Center’s work also extends to nurturing the next generation of African research leaders through offering fellowships and training for scholars in institutions of higher learning across the continent.
