My Journey of Learning and Growth at the Center

October 23, 2024

After graduating in 2022, I hoped to secure my dream job, but that opportunity didn’t immediately materialize. To support myself, I took on various unrelated odd jobs despite my Bachelor of Science in Communication and Public Relations. Nonetheless, my search for a role in my field continued. One morning in February 2023, while browsing through one of the many WhatsApp job groups I had joined, I stumbled upon an internship opportunity at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC). Without hesitation, I applied, praying for an interview chance, even though unfamiliar with the organization. After researching, I became genuinely interested in working at APHRC and sought divine guidance for the desired opportunity.

Soon after, I received an invitation for an interview—a moment of pure excitement! Initially, I thought I hadn’t made the cut, so preparing for the interview felt surreal. After a few days, I received a long-awaited call offering me the chance to begin my internship at the Center on September 11, 2023.

Since then, my journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Collaborating with a talented team at the Center has given me invaluable exposure to various learning experiences. Working with the Challenging the Politics of Social Exclusion (CPSE) team, specializing in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), has greatly expanded my knowledge in this new field.

The internship has also opened doors for networking with policymakers and decision-makers across Africa. One of my most memorable experiences was when the Secretary General of the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF), Ms. Boemo Sekgoma, visited the Center. Documenting the discussions between SADC PF and APHRC was an enlightening experience, shedding light on collaborative opportunities.

Additionally, I have developed skills in public speaking and public engagement. By the end of my internship, I conducted a training session on communication advocacy for civil society organizations in Rwanda, which bolstered my confidence in sharing knowledge and ideas with my colleagues. This experience has enriched my project management and stakeholder engagement abilities, allowing me to connect with various individuals, from media personalities to advocacy experts.

This internship has been a fulfilling opportunity that has empowered me to articulate my career aspirations more confidently. I’ve learned to create communication documents and strategies that support my team in successfully implementing plans and events. My time management skills have improved, enabling me to prioritize tasks effectively with guidance from my supportive team. Working alongside seasoned professionals has enhanced my emotional intelligence and taught me how to navigate challenging situations.

One challenge I faced was managing information overload, as this was my first time supporting an organization operating on a continental scale. Adapting to the organization’s workings and understanding its supported projects required diligence and attention to detail. However, with my team’s unwavering support, I quickly grasped the necessary concepts and roles of the advocacy unit. I embraced each task as a learning opportunity, and I now feel more confident and proud of my personal and professional growth.

Thanks to the invaluable mentorship I received, my internship will serve as a stepping stone in my career. This was my first formal role in a large organization, and I am grateful for the exceptional support system. I have been mentored in various areas, particularly communications, which will be instrumental in my career development.

I am thankful for the opportunity to intern at APHRC and sincerely appreciate my colleagues, Issabelah Mutuku, Grace Kibunja, and the Challenging the Politics of Social Exclusion(CPSE) project team. The skills I have gained will form the foundation for my career growth. I look forward to applying this experience as I continue to support the Center as an assistant communications officer.
