James Kisia

Research Capacity Strengthening Director

James leads APHRC initiatives in strengthening research capacity at individual and institutional levels for development in Africa.  This is done by strengthening formal university and research institutions partnerships which, in turn, foster opportunities to support researchers working on development issues through fellowships.

James joined APHRC in 2017 after establishing the International Centre for Humanitarian Affairs (ICHA) where he worked for three and a half years as the Executive Director.  Prior to that he was Deputy Secretary General at Kenya Red Cross Society.  James is a medical doctor with clinical and public health experience. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a Masters in Management from Lancaster University.

Over the last 11 years, James has been a senior manager in several organizations.  He is driven by exploring the role of leadership and management in the success of organizations particularly those focusing on health and humanitarian service delivery.  This interest is reflected in involvement in introducing and facilitating health leadership courses at the University of Nairobi Medical School as well as being a Co-Director for the Kenya Red Cross Health Leadership Course – work taken forward in collaboration with Lancaster University (UK).

James loves the outdoors. He has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya. He plays squash and table tennis.
