Catherine Asego

Project Coordinator

Catherine is a Project Coordinator within the Education and Youth Empowerment Unit (EYE). She supports the creation and coordination of activities of  regional and country specific Education Working Groups (EWG) in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. She also supports the developing of policy and communication tools that the working groups use in their engagement with the various policy makers in each of the countries. Catherine has over six years work experience in community development, civic education, policy engagement and communication.

Catherine holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communication from Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya and a Masters degree in Project Planning and Management from the University of Nairobi. She worked as the Campaigns Officer at Elimu Yetu Coalition (EYC), a national education coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), professional groupings and research institutions all working towards promoting the realization of the right to basic education and training for all in Kenya. It is here that she designed, planned and implemented projects championing the right to free and quality basic education for all in Kenya. Catherine was a member of the national Technical Working Group reviewing the progress made in basic education under the Education For All (EFA) goals in Kenya and has established County Education Networks bringing together civil society organisations at the grassroots to engage policy makers and monitor education service delivery at the county level.

Catherine is driven by the passion and desire to help improve lives especially of the most vulnerable children living in abject poverty through ensuring access to quality education. Having grown up in Kibra slums, she has grown to appreciate the benefits of education and how it transforms lives.

Catherine is a 2015 Mandela Washington Fellow under the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) program which is an initiative of the US President Barack Obama to invest in the next generation of African leaders. She was part of the select fellows chosen to facilitate a crisis simulation session during the presidential summit in Washington DC. She was also feted by Daystar University for the International Recognition award as an alumni going places.
