Akpan Hogan Ekpo

Professor Ekpo is currently the Director General and Chief Executive of the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM), owned by Anglophone speaking Central Banks of West Africa as well as the Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea. Professor Ekpo obtained a B.A (Cum Laude; Hons) in Economics from Howard University, Washington, D.C. USA.

He received an M.A. (Econs) and Ph.D (Econs) from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia, USA. His areas of specialization include Economic Theory (Microeconomics and Macroeconomics), Economic Development, Public Finance and Quantitative Methods. He has also received Executive Education at the World Bank Development Institute, Northwestern University, Harvard University and Oxford University. He has lectured in Universities in the USA, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria.

Professor Ekpo has published extensively in his areas of specialization in national and international journals. He has over 170 publications comprising refereed journal articles, books, chapters in books, conference proceedings and other research outlets; he has attended over 120 national and international conferences and has presented papers in most of them.  He has consulted (still consulting) for several national and international organizations such as the National Planning Commission, the World Bank, Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), AERC in Kenya, Global Network in India, Forum of Federations in Canada, among others. He was the first occupier of the Chief Anthony Ani Chair, Professor of Public Finance at the Federal University of Uyo, Uyo, Nigeria. Professor Ekpo has advised all levels of government (Municipal, State and Federal) in Nigeria.  Between 1995 and 1999, he was Chairman, Ministerial Advisory Committee, Federal Ministry of Finance, Abuja. He was Technical Adviser to the Vision 2010 Committee. He was Editor of the prestigious Nigerian Journal of Economics and Social Studies from 1997 – 2003. He has served in various government boards and boards of companies notably the Utilities Commission in Abuja and the Central Bank of Nigeria (2004-09). He was also a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the CBN, 2004-09. In 2002, Professor Ekpo was conferred with the National Productivity Order of Merit Award by the President of Nigeria. In 2003, in Accra, Ghana he received the Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Africa Leadership Award.

He was Vice-chancellor, Federal University of Uyo from May 2000-May 2005. He was a member of the National Economic Management team in Abuja, member of the Steering Committee of the 20: Vision 2020 and immediate past President of the Nigerian Economic Society. Professor Ekpo belongs to several professional associations such as the Nigerian Economic Society, American Economic Association, African Finance and Economic Association, International Institute for Public Finance, Nigerian Statistical Association, among others. He is member of the board of the African Institute for Applied Economics, and the Clement Isong Foundation in Nigeria.
