Testing the Feasibility of Incorporating Support for Early Childhood Development into the Baby Friendly Community Initiative in Koibatek Sub-County, Kenya

Program: Maternal and Child Wellbeing

When parents and caregivers don’t know how meet to their young children’s care and stimulation needs, it can impair children’s emotional, social, physical and cognitive development. The Baby Friendly Community Initiative (BFCI) is the World Health Organization’s global initiative to promote optimal maternal, infant, and young child nutrition in the community.

Findings from a pilot cluster randomized controlled trial of the BFCI in Koibatek Sub-County, Baringo, Kenya carried out 2014-2016 were positive.  The current project is testing the feasibility of adding an additional intervention alongside BFCI, called the Early Childhood Development (ECD). ECD involves all-round development of young children from preconception through the formative early years to safeguard and maximize children’s developmental potentials.

The study uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to answer two major research questions which are (i) to assess the impact of the BFCI on ECD outcomes and (ii) to test the feasibility of incorporating early childhood stimulation into the BFCI.
