Piloting the WHO Age-friendly City Indicator Guide

Program: Aging and Development

Employing secondary analysis of the Center’s NUHDSS and UPHD data and relevant qualitative evidence as well as some primary data collection the project undertook a pilot of WHO’s proposed set of core Age-friendly Cities (AFC) indicators in Korogocho and Viwandani. The project’s core objectives were to:

(a) generate a first body of data on key aspects of the ‘age-friendliness’ of older persons’ living contexts in two urban informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya

(b) bring to the fore critical areas and needs for interventions to improve structural, economic or service-related conditions for older slum dwellers, and

(c)pinpoint required adaptations to the age-friendly city indicators to optimize their feasibility and relevance in urban slum contexts.

This project was commissioned by the WHO Centre for Health Development, Kobe and aimed to pilot a proposed set of WHO core indicators for Age Friendly Cities (AFC) in Korogocho and Viwandani.
