MIYCN – Urban Project

Program: Health Challenges and Systems

This is a study conducted in two slums in Nairobi; Korogocho and Viwandani. It involves personalized, home-based counselling of pregnant women and mothers of infants on maternal nutrition and optimal infant and young child feeding practices by Community Health Workers (CHWs). The main aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of this intervention and its impact on nutritional outcomes. CHWs are trained using materials adapted from the World Health Organization.

Counselling is initiated during pregnancy and after birth till the baby is one-year old. It involves nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, optimal breastfeeding practices including breast positioning and attachment, the importance of immediate breastfeeding after birth and exclusively for six months thereafter, expressing breast milk and complementary feeding.

Mothers are also taught how to prepare nutritious, locally available food in a safe way after weaning, appropriate feeding frequency and quantity, as well as appropriate feeding practices including responsive feeding behavior.
