Reference Librarian and Systematic Review Consultant

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading pan-African research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, that conducts high quality policy-relevant research on population, health, education, urbanization and related development issues across Africa. APHRC actively engages policymakers and other key stakeholders to help ensure decision-making across the continent is informed by rigorous evidence-based research.
APHRC is looking to recruit two individuals (a systematic literature review expert and a reference librarian. Both are expected to have demonstrable experience in conducting systematic literature reviews. The consultants will support a desk review and synthesis of evidence on gender and conservation agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa.
About the Project
The concept of conservation agriculture (CA) was introduced to provide resource-efficient agricultural crop production based on an integrated management of soil, water and biological resources combined with purchased external inputs. As with any adoption package, the implementation of CA involves a variety of components that may or may not be fully adopted, which then affects efficiency and longer term sustainability of CA.
We will conduct a desk review of existing research and literature on the linkages between CA and gender, with specific reference to both the gendered impacts of CA and the impacts of farmers’ sex on the environmental and other effects of CA in SSA. More specifically, the project will:
Collate and synthesize existing research evidence on the gendered impacts of CA in SSA;
Systematically review and document existing research on the impacts of farmers’ gender on the environmental effects of CA in SSA;
Review and document the available evidence on the sources of resistance or social challenges faced by women in CA programs and on ‘what works’ to facilitate women’s participation conservation agriculture.
The review will rely primarily on published and unpublished information and materials (where obtainable), including research papers, existing data, reports and other pertinent documentations on gender and CA.
A. Systematic Literature Review Consultant – Terms of Reference
The specific duties of the systematic literature review consultant is to conduct a desk review, and synthesise existing research and evidence focussing on the linkages between CA and gender, specifically and comprehensively documenting the gendered impacts of CA in SSA, impacts of farmers’ at the sex-disaggregated level on the environmental and other effects of CA in SSA; sources of resistance or social challenges faced by women in CA activities as well as evidence concerning ‘what works’ to facilitate women’s future participation in CA.
The consultant will be supported by a reference librarian in the identification, search strategies, access to and utilisation of suitable requisite publications from appropriate electronic and physical/manual databases.
The candidate will among other requirements possess:
A minimum of a MA/MSc. in Social Sciences, Economics, Development and Agriculture;
Strong and demonstrable writing in the English Language. Previous experience in conducting literature reviews (especially systematic literature reviews), and scientific and/or report writing is key. Samples/copies of own previous work will be required to demonstrate this skill/capacity;
Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral expression;
Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
B. Reference Librarian – Terms of Reference
The reference librarian will support the process and the literature review consultant in the identification and utilization of suitable search strategies for finding requisite publications from appropriate databases. The reference librarian will lead the refining of the research questions, the development and deployment of search terms, and the extraction of relevant publications for use in the review.
The candidate will, among other requirements, be:
A practicing reference librarian with a minimum academic qualification of a Bachelor’s degree in Library Sciences;
An advanced user of and have access to physical and electronic resources while possessing advanced skills in applying library research methods and practices;
Thoroughly knowledgeable in professional library methods, reference resources and practices;
Familiar with similar research/reviews in the subject area. Previous and demonstrable experience in the conduct and support of the conduct of systematic reviews is required.
The review will be registered with the international prospective register of systematic and scholarly reviews (PROSPERO) database. A scholarly systematic review paper published in an open-access scientific journal will be the main product of this exercise.
