The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out high quality, policy relevant research on population, health and education issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. The Center seeks a media consultantto strengthen media relations and mobilize media coverage in the period August – September, 2013.
This TOR stipulates the scope of work and key deliverables for this media consultant for the period of one month.
The main roles of the Media Consultant are to increase local and international media coverage of APHRC thematic interests; raise awareness and disseminate information on two key research studies; strengthen relationships with key media houses and editors for increased visibility of APHRC and its mandate.
Specifically the Media Consultant will:
Identify and build strategic partnerships with relevant regional media networks.
Set up and manage cutting-edge and dynamic mechanisms to disseminate research information.
Strengthen collaboration between APHRC and leading African journalists and networks.
Organize two press conferences.
Prepare press documentation (including press releases and information packs) for the events.
Develop messages and materials for the two events.
Update and properly organized media contact lists. All contacts made with the media during that period will be handed over to APHRC at the end of the consultancy.
Ensure prime-time television coverage on NTV, KTN and Citizen TV and two international press houses.
Ensure front-page coverage of the two events on the Daily Nation and the East African Standard as well as two international newspapers.
Ensure the events get a minimum of 25 mentions (minimum) on top tier radio stations (Classic FM, Easy FM, Capital FM, and KBC’s National and General Services) and 3 international radio stations.
Pitch and ensure in-depth follow up coverage after event. Secure at least two top tier television interviews of relevant research scientists for each of the events and at least one in-depth story on either the Nation or the Standard.
Prepare an end of consultancy report that will include estimates of ‘viewership’ and ‘readership’ achieved by the campaign, all media contacts and media clips (audio/visual and print)
We are looking for a results-oriented, creative, confident and self-motivated person who is able to work independently; achieve widespread media coverage in top media houses as named above; follow through initiatives and meet deadlines. He or she must also be a good team player and willing to co-ordinate his or her media campaign with APHRC’s online communication strategy.
Terms and Conditions
1. The consultancy will be for one (1) month only covering the period of August to September 2013.
2. Collaboration with the Center’s Policy Engagement Team and correspondents all over Africa to ascertain widespread coverage is key
3. The products developed and delivered through this consultancy remain the exclusive properties of APHRC, and shall not be divulged and/or used for other purposes without prior written authorization of APHRC’s Communications Manager.
4. The contract will begin within 5 days of the selection of the consultant.
