The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that conducts high-quality, policy-relevant research on population, health and education issues in sub-Saharan Africa. The Center leads the East Africa Health Policy Research Organization (EA-HPRO), a consortium of the Kenya-based African Population and Health Research Center, Tanzania-based East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) and Uganda-based Partners in Population and Development Africa Regional Office (PPD-ARO).
The five-year project seeks to support innovative research into maternal, newborn and child health with technical expertise in policy engagement, strategic linkages between policymakers and researchers, and improved communications acumen.
APHRC seeks to recruit a Communications Focal Point for the EA-HPRO project. The position will be based at APHRC’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya and will be managed as part of the Policy Engagement and Communications (PEC) Division.
Serve as focal point with research teams for hub, including managing communications, timetable, scheduling, logistics for meetings and trainings;
Administer web portal for hub including adding timely and fresh content;
Coordinate reporting on quarterly basis to donor and other reporting as needed;
Lead on all communications materials emerging from the project, both traditional and multimedia, including editorials, blog posts, and op-eds;
Develop plan for engaging with media in the participating countries about policy implications of the research;
Support stakeholder and landscape mapping for targeted engagement with policymakers;
Collaborate on advocacy and policy engagement training curriculum to be administered in participating countries;
Participate in the development of key messaging to underpin advocacy strategy at regional and country levels.
Qualifications and Competencies
At least Bachelors’ degree in Communications. Master of Arts will be an added advantage;
At least five (5) years work experience in communication or related fields;
Exposure to public health, research or technical knowledge desired;
Experience in policy or strategy development desired;
Excellent command of English language, both written and spoken; ability to synthesize highly technical written and turn it into accessible language;
Knowledge of database software and ability to manipulate Excel spreadsheets;
Knowledge of WordPress.
