Göran Bondjers

Board Member

Göran has been Professor of Cardiovascular Research at the University of Gothenburg since 1989 and is Emeritus Professor at the university since 2011.

He was Dean of the Medical Faculty of the university between 1993 and 2001 and founding president of Sahlgrenska Academy (joint organization for the Medical Faculty, the Odontological Faculty and the Faculty of Nursing Sciences at University of Gothenburg) between 2001 and 2003. Between 2003 and 2005, Göran was Program Director for SWEGENE – collaboration between the Universities of Gothenburg and Lund within functional genomics. Between 2006 and 2010 he was Dean and Director of the Nordic School of Public Health, collaboration between the five Nordic Countries within Public Health. He is presently Emeritus Professor of Public Health at the Nordic School of Public Health.

Göran has been Chairman of the European Vascular Biology Association and the first European editor of one of the American Heart Association journals. He has held a number of board appointments within different organizations in Medicine and Public Health. Göran has published 260 original research papers primarily within cardiovascular research and has supervised more than 20 students to a PhD. His most important contributions have been on the role of lipid disorders and psychosocial stress on cardiovascular disease. Many of his students now hold senior positions in the academic community. In 2010, Göran was appointed Honorary Professor at Hanoi Medical University and he is currently program leader at University of Gothenburg as a Northern partner in CARTA – Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa.
