Dickens Akena is a psychiatrist and a lecturer at the Makerere University Medical School. He completed his MBChB training from Makerere University in 2003, and his Masters of Medicine in Psychiatry in 2008. He is involved in mental health research and clinical care. Dr Akena obtained his PhD from the University of Cape Town in South Africa; He studied the validity and use of depression screening instruments in persons with HIV/AIDS. He has published 5 papers in peer reviewed journals out of his PhD work. Dr Akena is also involved in teaching psychiatry and clinical work at the Department of Psychiatry at the Mulago Teaching Hospital. He is involved in a number of research projects, and is currently a project director of an NIH funded grant that is shifting tasks of managing depression to nurses and lower cadre medical personnel.
