This bibliography is prepared by the African Population and Health Research Center to share research and studies that have emerged on abortion in sub-Saharan Africa since the 2006 conference on “Linking Research to Action to Reduce Unsafe Abortion in sub-Saharan Africa”.
The bibliography has been produced to coincide with the “Africa Regional Conference on Abortion: From Research to Policy” in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, November 29-December 2, 2016. APHRC is a co-host of this conference, along with the Guttmacher Institute and Ipas. The bibliography comprises more than 600 abstracts of studies published between 2005 and 2016 on abortion in sub-Saharan Africa. It builds on similar work done by Agnès Guillaume that covered the period 1996-2005, and that was presented at the first consultative meeting on abortion in sub-Saharan Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in March 2006. The link to that work is http://www.ceped.org/cdrom/avortement1990-2005/presentation-gb.html
While we have made every attempt to be thorough in our search for relevant studies, research on abortion in Africa is growing fast and the number of outlets for publishing on the topic is also expanding. This bibliography may therefore not be exhaustive.

We conducted an online search of relevant literature published between 2005 and 2016 in the following electronic databases: African Journals Online (AJOL), MEDLINE, Bioline, Ovid, Web of Science, Popline/K4Health, Science Direct and Scopus. Reference lists of identified articles were also reviewed for relevant literature. Original research articles, case reports, editorials, review articles, and Letters to the Editor are all included. Publications focused on the burden and magnitude of abortion and abortion complications; post-abortion care; policy, regulations and restrictions; and intervention programs on abortion in sub-Saharan Africa. The search terms employed included "abortion,” “post-abortion,” “pregnancy termination,” “medical abortion,” and “unsafe abortion”.
The articles in this bibliography were selected from the journals listed below, and may be downloaded as PDF or HTML. The links to the abstracts and articles are included in the bibliography.
