About the Resource Database

This resource database has been prepared by the African Population and Health Research Center to share research and studies that have emerged on abortion in sub-Saharan Africa since 2006.

It catalogs more than 600 abstracts of studies published from 2005 to 2018 on abortion in sub-Saharan Africa. The database was launched during the 2016 “Africa Regional Conference on Abortion: From Research to Policy” in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Our work builds on similar work done by Agnès Guillaume that was presented at the first consultative meeting on abortion in sub-Saharan Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in March 2006.

The database includes abstracts that may be searched according to one or more fields:

Inclusion Criteria

APHRC conducted an online search of relevant literature published from 2005 to 2018 in the following electronic databases: African Journals Online (AJOL), MEDLINE, Bioline, Ovid, Web of Science, Popline/K4Health, Science Direct, and Scopus. Reference lists of identified articles were also reviewed for relevant literature and other resources such as multimedia. Original research articles, case reports, editorials, review articles, and Letters to the Editor are all included.

Publications focused on the burden and magnitude of abortion and abortion complications; post-abortion care; policy, regulations and restrictions; and intervention programs on abortion in sub-Saharan Africa. The search terms employed included "abortion,” “post-abortion,” “pregnancy termination,” “medical abortion,” and “unsafe abortion.”

APHRC has made every attempt to be thorough in its search for relevant studies for inclusion, research on abortion in Africa is growing fast and the number of outlets for publishing on the topic is also expanding. APHRC will continue to update the database periodically; researchers are welcome to share their online work with us directly for inclusion.
